Work starts on new household waste and recycling centre

Residents of Truro and surrounding villages will have more ways to recycle their household waste next year as work begins on the city’s new household waste and recycling centre (HWRC).

The Council’s new facility at Tregurra Park on Newquay Road is due to open next spring for residents to recycle a variety of items for free including household appliances, mattresses, gas bottles and wood. For a small charge, residents can also take bonded asbestos, tyres, soil and rubble and plasterboard to the centre.

Truro’s facility will become the 14th Council owned HWRC in Cornwall.

With the nearest HWRCs in St Day and St Austell, residents currently face travelling long distances to recycle items which cannot be collected as part of the Council’s fortnightly kerbside recycling collections, explained Councillor Sue James, Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for environment and public protection.

“We know that local residents have been keen to see a HWRC open in Truro and it’s great to see work starting to make this a reality,” she said. “Our HWRCs cater for a large quantity and range of materials and they have a good rate for re-use and recycling.”

The centre itself will partially be built using recycled materials, with contractors Dawnus Construction using Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) supplied from the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre.

Once construction is completed, the recycling centre will be managed by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK.

Patrick Daws, PFI General Manager at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, said: “We are pleased to be breaking ground on Truro’s new household waste recycling centre that will provide local residents with a modern, convenient facility to help them recycle more of their household waste.”
