01 December 2024: disposing of upholstered seating

Disposing of upholstered seating
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances that have the potential to cause damage to the environment if they are in waste that is not managed responsibly.

From 01 December 2024 we will be enforcing new rules from the Environment Agency for dealing with waste potentially containing POPs.

POPs are most often found in upholstered seating.
This includes:

  • Sofas
  • Armchairs
  • Futons
  • Sofa-beds
  • Upholstered dining chairs and office chairs
  • Beanbags
  • Floor cushions
  • Upholstered stools and foot stools

From 01 December 2024, you will not be able to take these items to the following HWRCs:

  • Bude
  • Dudnance Lane (Pool)
  • Helston
  • Newquay
  • Truro

Our other HWRCs at St Erth, United Mines, Falmouth, St Austell, Connon Bridge, Bodmin, Saltash, Tintagel and Launceston will still accept these items.

See the gov.uk website for more information on disposing of upholstered seating and POPs.
