Flying the Flag for a Greener Future
Cornish Pirates and SUEZ are celebrating a winning blend of creativity, education and environmental action as Gorran School is crowned the winner of the Cornish Pirates 2026 Sustainability Flag Competition.
The competition challenged students to think differently about recycling, reuse and protecting the environment, forming part of a six‑week sport and sustainability education programme delivered by the Cornish Pirates in local schools. Over 400 students took part in interactive sessions exploring not only sport and fitness but also waste reduction, reuse and effective recycling—bringing sustainability to life both in and beyond the classroom.
The winning design, created by Kit, stood out for its bold creativity, powerful sustainability message and strong connection to Cornwall’s natural environment. To mark the achievement, students from Gorran School were invited onto the pitch on Saturday 02 May, proudly celebrating their success in front of supporters, families and community partners before the flag was professionally made and raised.
Head of Commercial at Cornish Pirates, Ross Hancock, said “As a club deeply rooted in our Cornish community, we’re delighted to stand alongside SUEZ in helping young people understand sustainability. This event shows how sport, education and environmental responsibility can come together in a powerful way.”
Mark Hillson, PFI General Manager at SUEZ said “We are proud to work alongside the Cornish Pirates to provide hands‑on, engaging learning experiences that bring sustainability to life and help students understand the impact of their everyday actions.”
