Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre – Operational update (September 2025)
Line 2 at the energy recovery centre was shut down in July after our team identified a tube leak in a section of the boiler. The leak occurred due to part of the protective lining around the boiler tubes (known as the refractory) dislodging.
We brought in boiler specialists to review the issue and advise on a repair programme, which will take around six months to complete, with work scheduled to start in the autumn when the replacement parts arrive.
In the meantime, the annual planned maintenance shutdown for line 1 is continuing as scheduled, and will take place from 06 September for around one month.
During September when the facility isn’t operating, Cornwall’s household waste will be diverted to alternative facilities. Whilst line 2 is undergoing repairs, we may also need to divert some waste during seasonal peaks in waste production, such as Christmas. There is limited capacity in other energy recovery facilities in the region and so we will need to send some waste to landfill, making every effort to keep this to a minimum.
We will update you when line 1 returns to operation following the planned maintenance and will update you at the next community forum meeting on progress with the programme of repairs.
