On 27 March 2018, our community and education team in Cornwall visited Perranporth Community Primary School to support their first ever litter pick. The litter pick focussed on the streets the pupils use to walk to school every day. Parents and students were astonished at the amount of litter collected in just one morning, with the bins supplied by SUEZ soon overflowing with 116 bags of litter.

Working with Faye Clifton from Green and Blue, a design company based in Cornwall, pupils also took part in an assembly to raise awareness of the problem of litter.

After the assembly, Natalie Chard, our community liaison manager, and Emma Emmens, our community and education officer, spent the morning with students in years 4 and year 5 focussing on the importance of reducing waste, reusing and recycling rubbish. Children took part in various activities upcycling plastic milk bottles into Easter baskets and making recycled paper.

Head teacher, Alistair Johnson was delighted at the children’s enthusiasm to make a difference to their town and has committed to organising a litter pick once a term. The class that collected the most bags of litter won a trip to the Visitor Centre at Bodmin materials recycling facility, where they will be able to see first-hand what happens to the recycling collected from homes around Cornwall. We look forward to welcoming the winning class very soon.
